Ankit Nayal & Karolina Wolak

Stella & Hannah: Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?

My name is Ankit and I come from India. I’ve been in China since 2013, first doing my masters then working for Bactive Gyms. Now I am the area manager and personal trainer in Bactive. I’m an ACE certified personal trainer and nutrition specialist (ACE and Precision Nutrition). I am also a Men’s Physique competitor.

I’m Karo, from Poland, and I’ve been here since 2014 with breaks. I came here as an au pair and eventually found my way to Bactive Gyms as a trainer (where me and Ankit met). I’m an ACE certified personal trainer and functional training specialist, and IFAA certified Group Fitness Instructor. We are also parents to a little doggy named Kai.

Stella & Hannah: What sparked your initial enthusiasm for fitness?

I was a fat kid before. I started with a weight loss journey that soon turned into my passion and lifestyle.

I was a dancer for many years. When I stopped I lost my condition and my body started changing in ways I didn’t like. One day I made up my mind to gain back the control over my body and that’s how fitness came around.

Stella & Hannah: What's your specific field of expertise in personal training?

Bodybuilding, weight training and body re-composition.

Functional training, weight training and body re-composition.

Stella & Hannah:

What are the most common misconceptions men and women have regarding working out that you've come across?

Thinking there are lower and upper abs. It’s all one muscle that you have to target from different angles.

That working out your inner thighs with exercises like hip adduction (good girl, bad girl machine) will slim them down.

Stella & Hannah:

Do you have any general meal planning tips for someone who works out to get more muscle definition and lose body fat?

Generally speaking you can’t build muscles and lose fat at the same time. If you want to cut down make sure you eat clean and healthy.

And if you are looking to gain size eat, eat, eat!

Stella & Hannah:

And for you personally, what’s your typical meal for…

1.First thing upon waking

First thing I do in the morning is drink 1 to 1.5 litre of water. I always make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially in a dry place like Beijing.

I start my day with high calorie shake that Ankit makes for me. It’s made out of bananas, peanut butter, soy or almond milk, plant based protein powder, chia seeds and whatever else we can find in the kitchen.

My first meal is 300g of egg whites mixed with salt and masala.
